Alluring Illusion

The wall's original appearance can no longer be seen, not only because it has weathered many seasons, but also because it is marked with too many human joys and sorrows.

Passing through the tortuous alleys of Dalongdong, surprises are visible everywhere. Raising your head, you may peer into the window of a century-old home, its inhabitants gone, and only their stories left behind. Turn a corner, and you may still sense the successful scholars, glorying in their prestige under the splendidly decorated roofs. Every nook and cranny tells a tale from history.

From the Confucian Temple and Bao-an Temple to the “Teacher's House” (the Chen Yueji Estate) and some old fascinating stores, this district is full of unique images and totems. Working in graffiti, Lee Juin-yang has placed these folk art images on walls, retelling local legends, and turning the walls into a series of curtains, where the theater of Dalongdong is acted out.

Wending your way through the winding alleys and lanes of Dalongdong reveals surprises everywhere. Raise your head and peer into centuries’-old houses, their inhabitants gone, leaving behind only the stories of past villagers. Turn a corner and you might find the vestiges of scholars, ensconced under beautiful, ornamental roofs, reveling in their prestige. Indeed, every recess in Dalongdong reveals nuggets of history. From the Confucian and Bao-An Temples to the “Teacher’s House” (The Chen Yueji Estate) and some interesting old stores, everywhere you look is replete with images and totems. Working in the medium of graffiti, Jiun-Yang Li uses folk-art images to retell the tales of Dalongdong, transforming the walls of the lanes and alleys here into a set of curtains that rise to reveal the performance that is Dalongdong.

Description of Style
Working with graffiti, Jiun-Yang Li uses folk-art images to retell the tales of Dalongdong, transforming the walls of the lanes and alleys here into a set of curtains that rise to reveal the performance that is Dalongdong. Everyday for about a month, Li worked on the mural located at the Teacher’s House on Dihua Street, Section 2.
