The
Chen Yueji Estate (“Teacher's House”), a Class 3 Historical
Site built in Dalongdong in 1807, was the home of renowned
scholar and education activist Chen Weiying
(1811-1869), who planted the seeds of learning in this salty
harbor town. After many years of painstaking efforts, his
name spread throughout Dalongdong, and the estate of his father
is still remembered today as “Teacher's House.” Now the scholar is gone
and his banner flies no more. All that remain are two flagpoles
to commemorate his resonant voice of wisdom.
On
a convex mirror mounted on a corner of the building where
traffic turns, Hsu Cheng-jen has etched the visage of Chen
Weiying, as a road sign showing the way forward. Separated
by time and standing at a turning point in the road, it is
as if this historic scholar and everyone who walks by are looking back on
the past together, and gazing into the future.
/ Concept and Process】
In this day and age, education – in particular, higher education
– has a deeper meaning: to lead society into the next century.
Using a rubbing-technique to etch the name “Teacher’s House,
Mr. Wei-ying Chen” onto convex traffic mirrors is naturally
a gesture to pay homage to Chen’s contributions toward education
– achievements that were a beacon of light for Taiwanese society
during his time.
Method of Installation
Laser technology is used to engrave the name “Teacher’s House,
Mr. Wei-ying Chen” onto steel-constructed traffic mirrors
on city streets in such a way as to prevent them from losing
their refraction function. The original purpose of the mirrors
is to provide both pedestrians and motor vehicle operators
with a way to see on-coming traffic at curvy locations susceptible
to blind spots. When the coast is clear, drivers can continue
on.
Materials:Laser Technology, Steel-Constructed
Convex Mirrors
