Loud
and Clear
In an age when bamboo served as material for
books, and clay served as paper, and in even earlier times,
listening was a way to read.
Luo Li- ch en reimagines a closed temple door
as a sanctuary spreading the wisdom of the classics, in the
hope that the ancient soliloquy of Confucian culture will
penetrate the walls loud and clear, and e ch o throughout
the city.
The reverent ch anting of Confucian Temple students
young and old respond to the spirits of Confucius and the
sages, from whi ch arises indescribably solemn messages.
If you hold your breath and listen attentively,
you will hear the profundity of ancient culture. Even if you
just stroll by, you will be moved by the classical feeling
of this remote form of learning.

Loud
and Clear
Using a non-visual approach that creates the feeling of suddenly
being close, then far away, the sound of the reader’s voice
is heard crisply and clearly, just like the immutable voices
of cantors heard in countless temples for hundreds of years.
Structure
(I.) The piece consists of three different sensation
areas, respectively indicated as points A, B and C. Point
A plays a recording of a child reciting classical poetry,
Point B an adult and Point C a senior citizen.
(II.) When someone walks over to point A, speakers at points
B and C begin to play at the same time, broadcasting the sounds
of the adult and senior reciting classical poetry.
(III.) Similarly, when someone walks over to point B, speakers
at points A and C begin playing at the same time, broadcasting
the sounds of the child and senior reciting classical poetry.
(IV.) This project attempts to use a non-visual approach to
create the feeling of suddenly being close then far away.
The sound of the narrator’s voice is crisp and clear, just
like the immutable voices of cantors heard in countless temples
for hundreds of years.
