Jo-ching Chen
In Dalongdong, a place with profound history and culture, resident artists interacted with local people for six to seven months. This experience, as inexhaustible materials for artistic creation, helps complete the plan of public art, and enriches the depth and gradation of artistic creation.

Resident artist Ho-jang Liu has videotaped the whole process of interaction since October, and turned the records into an album along with a documentary film. In addition, he found the feature food in Dalongdong, chose the trader, took photographs, made light box with which he exchanged for food from the traders, and held parties. Artistic works has become a part of local life.

In order to make his metal sculpture a part of the community, Ding-zan Liu decorated the deserted garden opposite to Dalong Elementary School and turned it into jellyfish in forest, within which there is “red ant club,” symbolizing an outsider. This design is based on the intention of making artistic works an essential part of community and family life with the action of claiming red ants.

With dance and music, Mei-kuang Li and Chin-pin Lin associated teaching in school for the hearing impaired, and created “Memories of Chairs” with the students. French artist Arnaud Lechat, having long studied in Taiwanese Opera troupe of Pao-an Temple, would present his work and a collaborated performance with the troupe. Ken-hui Yu, having visited local stores, made a documentary film on local handicrafts, through which he made records of local production and created all kinds of possibilities of artistic creation.

Lighting designer Wing Tsou, combining records and interviews of handicrafts and materials collected in the community, would assemble lighting apparatus, with which she could form “Light of Memories” with local residents.
Versatile and profound, works of resident artists enriches community life tremendously.
