Di Hua-er Is Here

At the intersection of Chongching North Road and Hami Street, the highway enters Taipei City. With the old gate no longer in use, what new image should Taipei present to her visitors?

Evoking a sense of Taiwanese folk tradition and the sensibility of contemporary art, Pan Ping-yu has created two tiger cubs, Di Hua-er and Dee Hua-er, as the two attractive ambassadors welcoming visitors to Old Taipei. The stripes and colors on the two cubs' coats are the birthmarks of Dalongdong. The poet Yan Ai-lin has transformed their mysterious world into verse: In fact, they are the guardian spirits of Dalongdong, who have finally appeared before our eyes in this boisterous festival. In such a marvelous place, they think, why not bask for a while in the glorious springtime sun, and send out a greeting to everyone?

The clay-constructed lion/tigers of the Bao-An Temple are the inspiration for this soulful exhibit by Pan Ping-yu entitled, “Di hua-er is here!” From the traditional clay-molded relics, a balloon-form of the originals was constructed and named, “Di hua-er.” The names Di hua-er and Di hua (the character “hua” in both names has the same pronunciation but different intonation and different meaning) holds significance on two levels.
This section of Di hua Street prominently reveals the history of Taipei’s immigrants. Tradition followed the moving in and settling of this area’s immigrants, permitting the continuous development of new cultural values. The printed material of “Di hua-er is here!” and the activity itself work hand in hand. In the material, the memory of the original clay-molded lions/tigers stationed at a different location on Di hua Street, their identities, stories, even where they lived, are all recorded. And with the addition of this new immigrant, Di hua-er, and his stories, written by Ai-lin Yen, it is Pan’s hope that by reading and searching through the accounts of these lions/tigers, residents will come to understand the history of their community. Pan also hopes that residents will take in Di hua-er as its newest member.
Di hua-er is also a symbol of this public art festival’s entry into the community. It is Pan’s hope, therefore, that all of the activities and public art stationed here will gradually become a part of this community’s activities and a symbol of a new life-force in its culture.
The community activity, “Make friends will Di hua-er,” makes use of printed literature about the clay-molded lions/tigers located along Di hua Street. Using the material as a guide, searching for the lions/tigers, reading their stories and reflecting their history will allow participants to understand the history of their own community.
